Costamar Group’s Collaboration with AAA Enhances Puerto Rico’s Water Supply

Costa Mar Group is one of several contractors working with the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA) in response to the EPA’s new regulations aimed at reducing harmful chemicals, specifically perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), in drinking water. PFAS are linked to severe health issues, including cancer and reproductive harm.

AAA has launched five pilot projects in wells and one in a filtration plant to test effective technologies for reducing six types of PFAS identified by the EPA. These initiatives are crucial for ensuring safer drinking water for Puerto Rico’s residents. Costa Mar Group brings to this project decades of experience in construction, with a primary focus on improving storm, sanitary sewer, and water lines, ensuring a secure and effective implementation.

To combat PFAS contamination, AAA is exploring three methods: reverse osmosis, ion exchange, and activated carbon, which is particularly effective due to its regenerative nature. AAA assures that the water supply is highly regulated by the EPA and Department of Health, ensuring that distributed water meets safety standards.

Costa Mar Group’s collaboration with AAA is a significant step toward improving water safety in Puerto Rico. By addressing PFAS contamination and implementing advanced technologies, these projects are essential for protecting public health and enhancing the quality of life for Puerto Rican residents.
